Australian Wildlife Conservancy:
Buckaringa Sanctuary, a 20 km2 nature reserve located 30 km north of Quorn, is owned
by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC). The AWC is a non profit
organisation which establishes sanctuaries for the conservation of threatened
wildlife and ecosystems.
The Sanctuary is home to at least eight
Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby colonies, with the Main Gorge colony being one of
the largest in the southern / central Flinders Ranges. Although once abundant,
the strikingly beautiful Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby is now listed as vulnerable
to extinction.
Normally closed to visitors, the AWC will
open the sanctuary to 4WD, AWD and High clearance 2WD vehicles however some 2WD
vehicles will not be able to get through due to clearance restrictions.
AWC staff and volunteers will be available onsite to answer questions.
Travelling
through Buckaringa and Middle Gorge and along the Buckaringa
Scenic Drive (a one way only route through Buckaringa) visitors will have an
opportunity to learn more about this unique part of the Flinders Ranges.
Routes are clearly marked, with other tracks closed by temporary fencing.
